Healthy vision starts with a comprehensive eye exam
Whether you’re looking for bifocals, blue light glasses or a pair of glasses with single vision lenses, consider scheduling an appointment for an eye exam to ensure that your prescription is up to date. During your eye exam, ask your eye doctor which eyeglass lens materials, as well as which coatings, would be best for your specific vision condition and your lifestyle. Your eye doctor can recommend the best eyeglass lens options for your next pair of glasses to help you see clearly.

Eyeglass Lens Material

When choosing your lens material there are a number of options to consider, each of which offers its own benefits and drawbacks; some are more affordable or more durable than others, while newer types of lens materials can offer all that with added vision quality but at a higher price point.

- Plastic. For many years, this lens, also known as CR-39, has been the standard material for eyeglasses. It weighs half as much as glass and is less likely to shatter. This lens's plastic material is easily tinted, and UV protection can be added.

- Polycarbonate. Polycarbonate was the first lens material to be "thinner and lighter." Polycarbonate is ten times stronger than glass and CR-39. Polycarbonate lenses are the preferred material for safety and children's glasses. UV protection is also provided by the lens material.

- Trivex. Trivex lenses are thin, light, and resistant to impact. This lens is another popular option for safety glasses and children's glasses. This lens material also protects against UV rays.

- High Index (Hi). High index lenses are thinner and lighter than plastic, poly, or Trivex lenses. There are numerous high index lenses available, including Hi 1.60, Hi 1.67, and Hi 1.74. The optician will assist you in determining which high index lens is best for you. A higher index will help keep the lenses thinner for stronger prescriptions. This material is also UV resistant.

- Glass. Glass is the most scratch-resistant material available and provides superior optics. Glass, on the other hand, must be specially treated for impact resistance. Glass is also much heavier and not available in as many designs. Glass lenses can only be used in certain frames.

Lenses to protect you eyes

Special coatings are applied to the lenses of your eyeglasses to protect your eyes. All of the following options can be used in conjunction to ensure that your eyeglasses provide you with the best vision for your needs and lifestyle:
- Photochromic lenses are light-sensitive lenses that can adjust to different levels of brightness and filter UV rays.
- Anti-glare lenses shield your eyes from bright light and are ideal for people who drive frequently or spend time outside.
- Blue light protection lenses block harmful light emitted by the sun, televisions, computer screens, and cell phones.
- UV protection lenses are capable of blocking UV rays.

Lenses with special features

- Anti-scratch lenses help protect your lenses from scratches by coating them with a strong coating. This extends the life of your glasses and keeps your vision clear.
- Anti-smudge lenses have a special layer or coating that prevents smudges and fingerprints from adhering to the lenses.
- Anti-dust lenses have a coating that prevents dirt and dust from adhering to the lens, keeping it clean for longer.
- Water-repellent lenses allow water to slide right off your lenses, preventing rain or condensation from obscuring your vision.
- High index lenses are thin and light lenses that can alter the direction of light entering the eye. - These are usually only available with higher-priced prescriptions.
- Anti-fog lenses enable you to switch between hot and cold environments without having to worry about your vision.
